Ford Model A Pickup Restoration - Radiator for Electroplating - Powder Coating Parts (October 2012)This month I have started with an unexpected new job …
Here you can see the rusty original hood and on the right hand side a reproduction part. After I've checked the fitting, I came to the conclusion that I would reuse the original one.
There is only one problem, which is the rust at the bottom.
To prepare it for the electroplating I wanted to remove the color on the inside. Unfortunately, that was harder than I thought, because neither strippers nor other liquids which I have tried could harm the paint! The only solution was sandblasting.
During sand blasting I have realized why this color was so hard to remove. I couldn't find any chrome under the paint, there was bare sheet metal. I guess Ford wanted to save some copper, nickel and chromium in the manufacturing process and applied this resistant paint before they did the electroplating.
On the outside, I sanded the rusty parts, the remaining chromium will then stripped off in the galvanic shop.
It's a long time since I did last time powder coating. These are all parts that will be coated in black color.
The gas filter is ready.
It is now powdered with black powder - looks gray but this is because of the photo flash.
After baking, it is ready for installation.
All parts are finished now.
