Ford Model A Pickup Restoration - Building New Wheel Covers Part 5 - Making Pipe, Driving, Grinding (July 2017)The last piece which is missing is a tube. This is also made from 1 mm sheet metal.
First I bend the sheet metal over a round steel and fasten it in that position.
For welding (to prevent holes …), I clamp a piece of copper on the inside of the tube.
All tubes are welded, now I'll see how easy these can be shaped.
For this task I have made these two aluminum molds, which I will press into the pipe to enlarge both sides.
My first experiments are sobering. Most time the welds cracked or the tube was squashed, … I must think about how I could do that better.
Now I have grinded the weld, and hammered the whole weld with a small hammer. This has changed the structure of the steel near the weld in such a way that I never cracked a tube anymore. In addition, I have greased the tube on the inside wall, so that I have less friction during the pressing process. Now everything works perfectly.
One side is already enlarged, now I can make the other side.
With the right procedure everything works perfectly.
To clean the welds I had to build a small tool first. From Bosch, there is a grinding machine available which works with such sandpaper rolls. I want to use these rolls but on my own grinding machine.
This requires a threaded rod which I have modified with a lathe.
The pieces can be assembled …
… and mounted on my grinding machine.
This tool made it easy to grind all weld seams. Now all the necessary parts for my wheelhubs are available and in a next step I will weld them together.
