Ford Model A Pickup Restoration - Building new wheel covers part 3 - Punch and die for wheel nut (May 2017)As I mentioned in March, the pitch circle of my wheel cover is made. Now I want to show you how I made it.
First I made a stamp and die. The cone angle is suitable for the wheel nut and rim. The cylindrical part has the same diameter as the hole which I drilled into the sheet metal.
Now I can put it under the press - stamp, die and in between the 1 mm sheet metal. Since the stamp exactly fits into the hole, I have a precise guide that the hole will be at the right place.
Now increase the pressure, my hole is enlarged and gets th final shape. Until everything had the correct shape, I had to modify my press tool several times. In this case, Try & Error is the fastest method to reach the target.
The wheel nut fits …
… and also from the inside view, everything is as it should be.
It was very difficult to measure the pitch circle of my wheel. I could only determine the circle by measuring the distance of the wheel bolts as well as the diagonal distance and then calculating the size of the circle. With the calculated radius, I could make this guide.
My first try was positive and the wheel cover also fits to the wheel.
Now I can cut the sheet metal at the outer edge.
A first part is made but compared to the old wheel cover on the right hand side, there is still something to do …
