Ford Model A Pickup Restoration - Building new wheel covers part 4 - Deep drawing of sheet metal (June 2017)This month I will make the cap of my wheelhub.
To do this, I had to make some tools for the press. Everything is ready, a round piece of sheet metal, the stamp and as a die a ring of aluminum.
Let's go to the press for the first trial.
From below, the first try does not look that bad …
… but from above the result is not what I wanted to see :-(
A second try with a smaller sheet metal diameter is much better.
Still the cylindrical part of the cap is not usable.
After that, I first made a new die from steel instead of aluminum and I changed the pressing procedure.
As the pressing pressure increases, the edge of the sheet metal is slightly discarded.
Before I build up further pressure I smoothed this edge with a hammer until the edge flattened. The steel is compressed now and the folds are gone.
This smoothing I make now step by step until the entire edge has disappeared in the steel ring.
Everything is looking perfect from below.
This time, also the cylindrical surface is smooth and the part can finally be used!
The cup does not have the final shape which is made now. This step is simple, the only problem is that all parts must be perfectly aligned.
The tools used for this step are shown on the left side of the picture.
5 pieces are made now, one of them is a spare part, should something go wrong.
